Pope Francis is considering married men as catholic priest
especially in remote areas with shortage of clergy.
The proposal was raised by Bishop of Brazil who claimed that
there is just one priest for every 10,000 Catholics in the Amazon Region. He complained
that some remote areas are only administrated to once or twice in a year.
According to the Italian Newspaper II Messaggero the Pontiff
has approved a request for Bishops to discuss the proposal though pope Francis
said he does not believe that lifting the current clergy rule will help solve
the shortage problem.
Pope Francis stated that if successful married Catholic men
known as Viri Probati will be able to become priest though the current or
serving priest will not be able to marry.
Speaking to Die Zeit earlier this year Pope Francis said “we
must consider Viri Probati is a possibility".
“Then we must determine what tasks they can perform in remote
areas”.
