Yonhap, a South Korean news agency, quoted military officials
saying that the missile flew towards the east from Pyongsong in Pyongan
province. It then crashed into the Sea of Japan.
The claims
were then confirmed by a US government source.
The Pentagon
said it was assessing the ‘probable’ launch, but confirmed that it happened at
3.30am local time (6.30pm GMT).
US
authorities are now working with South Korea to analyse the missile’s trajectory,
and to work out what range it had.
It’s not yet
known how far it went or whether it flew over Japan, like other missiles
launched earlier this year.
North Korea has already fired a number of test missiles
throughout this year, causing tensions to rise with the international
community.
These
included the country’s first intercontinental ballistic missiles.
In August,
Japanese citizens were woken up to J-Alerts on their mobile phones at 6.02am
warning them that a missile was flying over the country.
The missile
test was later condemned by Japanese PM Shinzo Abe as ‘reckless’.
