Sir Mo Farah has been targeted by trolls for daring to wish his fans a Merry Christmas on Instagram.

The four-time Olympic champion, who is a Muslim, shared a festive snap on Christmas Day in which he is wearing a Santa hat, along with the words ‘Merry Christmas’.

However, the athlete, who has 667,000 followers, was turned on by some of his fellow Muslims who accused him of disrespecting their religion.

One wrote: ‘Are you serious? You are Muslim you can’t do this, I’m sorry for you.’

Another said: ‘You are being given the name of our beloved prophet Mohamed and it is better to protect the honourable name and your religion of Islam.’

And a third added: ‘The respect I had for you went way down. Shame bro.’

But the trolls were outnumbered by people who jumped in to defend Sir Mo, while others urged him to ignore the abuse.

The incident comes less than a week after Amir Khan was subjected to racial abuse – and even death threats – for putting up a Christmas tree for his daughter.
The boxer wrote: ‘While everyone’s asleep, daddy put the Christmas tree up. Lamaisah’s going to be happy.’

But his photo was met by shocking comments, including by one user who threatened Khan and his family.
