The monument
of saint Martin de Porres was erected outside Blackfriars Priory school in
Adelaide last week.
When the
statue was uploaded on social media by some of the school teachers, it got the
attention of everyone and sparked a serious debate amongst viewers.
According to
reports they were forced to cover up the statue with a black sheet after the
image went viral.
In a statement
on Facebook, Principal Simon Cobiac said that the monument was designed by a
sculptor in Vietnam.
He added
that when he saw it in 2D, it didn’t look suggestive.
He said:
‘The two-dimensional concept plans for the statue were viewed and approved by the
executive team in May but upon arrival the three-dimensional statue was deemed
by the executive to be potentially suggestive.
‘As a
consequence, the statue was immediately covered and a local sculptor has been
commissioned to re-design it.
‘The school
apologises for any concerns and publicity generated by this matter and is
taking action to substantially alter the statue.’
